Dragons of Archchang

This is the music that plays while you're reading it:

Chapter one: Dragon Keeper
Darren walked through the murky swamp of the Forest of Darkness. His brown long hair smelled like ashes and his clothes were singed black. His face was covered in soot and his arms were red with blisters coving them.
He hadn't meant to do it. He hadn't meant to hurt everyone... It had happened so suddenly. He hated himself for it. He was a danger to everyone, and didn't belong anywhere near them again.
Darren felt a tug on his cloak. Turning around he found a muddy hand trying to pull him under the nasty water of the swamp.
"Swamp Boogies..." Darren growled, his flat teeth rapidly turning into fangs. Darren took a deep breath and roared at the top of his lungs at the monster. Frightened, the Swamp Boogie quickly retracted his hand back into the mud. Darren snorted at it, walking through the swamp once again.
"It's not like I can control it..." Darren said to himself, his mind flooded with past events, "It just happens and then when it happens I can't do anything about it..."
He only stopped for a moment when he saw something moving out of the corner of his eye. He paused, scanning the area he had seen the movement.
"Nothing but a trick of the eyes?" He questioned himself as he continued forward, being more cautious then ever. He continued on his way, his mind left in his misery, when again, he saw movement beside him. Darren's eyes turned from a sky blue to a piecing yellow color. His pupils dilated into slits. That hadn't been a trick of the eyes, he was sure of it. However, the sudden change to his eyes alarmed him as well.
"No. No!" he yelled at himself, rubbing his eyes, "You already did that once. You can handle this, as a man."
Suddenly Darren felt an iron chain wrap around his waist. Panicked, Darren's hand changed into a red scaled claw that broke the chain easily.
"NO, NO!" He screamed at his hand. Suddenly a whole mob of people came from the trees, carrying pitchforks, torches, chains, and a gigantic cross bow that carried a long arrow covered in a green gooey liquid. They all ran toward him, screaming cries of revenge.
"D-Don't come any closer!" Darren yelled at them, sounding terrified, "I don't want to hurt you anymore than I've already have! JUST GO AWAY!!!"
A farmer angrily lunged at Darren, throwing his pitchfork at his chest. Darren quickly deflected the pitchfork with his clawed hand, but sent it flying right back into the farmer. He gaged as he watched the farmer fall to the ground.
"Not again! Please not again!" Darren thought, turning around and running from the fallen man. However, he couldn't have gotten far. He was surrounded, and try as he might, he couldn't escape the chains that held him to the ground.
"Please no!" Darren screamed, tears dripping down his face, "I didn't mean any thing that I did! It's not my fault!"
"Silence, demon!" a preacher commanded, kicking Darren in the side then standing on top of him. He turned to the crowd and announced, "WE HAVE CAUGHT THE DRAGON THAT DESTROYED OUR HOME!!!"
The crowd yelled in victory, lifting their weapons to the air.
"I'm not a dragon!" Darren cried, feeling weak and powerless under the many chains that held him.
The preacher ignored the boy's cries and said again to the crowd, "Now we will rid ourselves of this evil once and for al--"
"Wait! What if he's not a dragon?" interrupted a young woman from the crowd, "He doesn't look like one. He almost looks human!"
"Then you are fooled by the dragon's spell!" The preacher said, hopping off Darren's back and hoisting him up by his hair. Darren screamed in pain, but the preacher took no notice.
"His body may look human, but his features beg to differ!" He said, pointing to Darren's eyes and mouth, "Only a dragon would have fangs protruding from his mouth. Only a dragon would have eyes that cause a man to quiver in fear!"
Suddenly Darren felt his tail grow out of the chains.
"THERE IS EVEN MORE PROOF THAT THIS BOY IS A VILE DRAGON!!!" The preacher said, throwing Darren on the ground once again.
"But I'm not! I'M NOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTT!!!" Darren screamed, releasing a jet of flame from his mouth, it burring the insides of his cheeks. The crowd screamed and a few younger villagers began to cry.
"WE SHALL VANQUISH THIS EVIL TODAY!!!" The preacher yelled above the noise, "BRING THE CROSSBOW!"
The villagers pushed the giant crossbow into place, aiming it at Darren. The preacher grinned manically as he watched Darren scream and try to wiggle away.
"You all know that dragons can be nearly impossible to kill!" He announced to the crowd, "That's why we are making sure this one stays dead by shooting it with an enormous arrow covered in Dragon's Bane Jelly. Dragon's Bane is very poisoness to all dragons. Make sure you all remember this, for tomorrow we shall go town to town on a quest to kill all dragons in Archchang!"
"YEAH!!!" Came a roar from the crowd. They all then began to chant: "KILL THE DRAGON! KILL THE DRAGON! KILL THE DRAGON!"
Darren roared at the top of his lungs! He wasn't a dragon! Yet he knew that he wasn't completely human either.
"What am I?" He softly cried to himself as he heard the twang of the crossbow firing. Darren held his breath! This was the end!
"RRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!"
A deafening sound echoed through the sky! A fierce wind swept through the swamp, nocking people to their backs. A ginormous shadow covered the area. Darren opened his eyes. He wasn't dead! The wind had forced the arrow down, it landing in the mud just before it could reach Darren.
A voice like lightning struck the sky, saying, "Swamp Boogies! If you value your pathetic lives, you will take every human that has harmed this child and bring them down into your murky waters to suffer for the evil they have done!"
Suddenly a thousand muddy, slimy hands reached up toward the sky! The started grabbing every one of the towns people they could grab; men, women, and children. They slowly pulled them down into the depths of the swamp, silencing their screams. A few people were spared from such a fate, and they were able to escape into the forest. The preacher was not one of the lucky ones.
"I will not die here! I will not die here!" he exclaimed vengefully as the three arms successfully pulled him under the murky water, "You mark my words, dragon boy! You will die, and I'll be there to see it happen!"
Darren lied still, looking around horrified. Muck and grime covered his face and the chains were still tight, but he was alive. Then five Swamp Boogie arms shot out of the ground! Darren yelped, but the arms didn't grab him. Instead they grabbed the chains, loosening them enough for Darren to crawl out.
Suddenly the shadow over the area swooped out of sight. Darren looked up, but didn't see anything. That's when a loud thud behind him nocked him to the ground. Darren scrambled to his feet, looking at the creature behind him. A silver dragon with a black spiked spine looked down on him. Her black webbed wings were folded neatly on her back and her giant black claws dug into the swamp beneath her. Darren wanted to me scared. He wanted to scream and run away, but something kept him there looking at the magnificent beast. Something that had haunted him from the time he was born till now.
"You are welcome." The dragon said in her lightning-like voice, a few sparks of lighting escaping her mouth. Darren was silent. "Do you wish to ask me a question young one?" The dragon predicted.
Tears still dropped down Daren's face. His pointed teeth clenched and his yellow eyes looking up in pure sadness at the creature. He held out his dragon hand and tail as he asked, "What am I?"
"Come young one." The dragon said, lowering her head so that Darren could climb on top of it,  "I will show you what you are and more."
Darren was hesitant. He had been taught that dragons were fierce monsters that would gobble you whole if you were not careful. However, his desire to know why this was happening to him overwhelmed him and he climbed atop the dragon's head.
The scales felt surprisingly soft, almost like fur, though they looked like mirrors. Darren grabbed onto the first big spike of the dragon's spine and held on tightly as she lifted her head.
"Is this your first time flying?" She asked him as she spread out her gorgeous black wings.
Darren nodded, though he wasn't sure why she would ask that as if he had ridden a dragon before.
"During the first part, lift-off, you will experience pressure on your body. Whatever you do, keep your head forward and pointed to the sky. It helps."
Darren nodded and gripped the spike tighter. Then the silver dragon jumped up into the air and began to flap her wings. Darren could feel the pressure the dragon had described, but didn't find it at all uncomfortable. In fact, he found it relaxing and somewhat soul-freeing to feel his hair whip around his face as he traveled through the air. For the first time that day, he laughed in joy at the exhilarating feeling he had found.
The silver dragon leveled out her flying as soon as they were above the clouds. Darren let go of the spike he was holding onto, feeling like he could manage to stay on the dragon's head now. He crawled to the edge of the dragon's forehead and looked below. He could see everything! Farms, cities, and... and the town he had just destroyed. His joy left him as thoughts of him burning the innocent town down to ashes returned. He returned to the spike he left and put his head in his hands, ashamed.
"Do not blame yourself for what happened to that human village." The silver dragon comforted Darren, "It is not your fault, but mine. I should have seen the signs of your species before it even happened. For that, I apologize."
"My species?" Darren asked, crawling down the dragon's head and sitting on it's snout, "So, are you saying I'm not human?"
"No." The dragon reassured, laughing at the horrified expression on Darren's face, "You are human, just not all human."
"Am I part dragon then?" Darren asked, "Am I a Wyvern?"
"No. You are part dragon, but not like a Wyvern. Wyvern are filthy half-breeds that walk like men but look like dragons. Some of them are kind, mind you, but most are vile and evil creatures. Never trust a Wyvern till it has given you a scale off it's tail. Will you remember that for me?"
"Yes." Darren replied, "But if I'm part human, part dragon, but not a Wyvern; what am I?"
"You are a Dragon Keeper." The silver dragon explained, it's eye's glimmering at the very mention of it, "Dragon Keepers are an old race of half-human half-dragons. They have the power to be either a dragon or a human at anytime, which explains your mismatched look right now."
Darren looked at his dragon tail and hand and asked, "How do I change back?"
"Calm yourself." she replied, "When you are angered, afraid, or brave your dragon attributes show. When you are calm, happy, or feeling well your human attributes show. You must learn to control your emotions if you wish to become a truly great Dragon Keeper. Once you get better at controlling emotions, you'll be able to change back and forth with just a thought. Take a deep breath and count to ten. Then release."
So Darren took in a big gulp of air and counted for ten seconds. Once he released, he found that his tail had disappeared, his hand was normal again, his teeth were no longer pointy, and his eyes had changed once again. Darren sighed in relief.
"Thank you." Darren said. Then a thought came to his mind. "If I'm a Dragon Keeper, are my parents Dragon Keepers as well?"
"Sadly not." The silver dragon replied, "You see, Dragon Keepers of old times past decided to mate with only humans and other Dragon Keepers, not dragons. However, as generation to generation passed, the gene of being a Dragon Keeper became more and more recessive, resulting in only a few Dragon Keepers born each year. Don't fret though. The King of Dragons; Master Kade of old, may he rest in peace; put a spell on the gene so that Dragon Keepers would continue to be born in the years to come. So your kind will never cease to exist."
"Why do you dragons care so much for Dragon Keepers?" Darren asked, a pit puzzled to why such a great king would do something like that.
"Because Dragon Keepers are exactly what they are called, keepers of dragons. They help us, protect us, and are basically over all dragon kind; even the King of Dragons would yield to your command."
"Wow..." Darren said, thinking about what the dragon had told him, "... But what if I don't want that kind of power?"
"Your power was inherited, young one." the silver dragon explained, "There is no running from it."
Darren sighed and ruffled his long brown hair. Now that he knew what he was, he almost didn't want to know anymore. He did not desire power over anybody. He just wanted to be a normal kid with normal responsibilities. He didn't want to control dragons.
"You are troubled my your newfound power." the silver dragon chuckled, "That is good. It means you will not abuse it."
"What is your name?" Darren asked the dragon, walking back up her snout and sitting on her forehead again.
"Crish."
"Crish..." Darren sighed, laying against her long black spike, "How will I learn how to become a Dragon Keeper?"
"Don't worry young one, I will teach you all that I know." The silver dragon said, slowly turning in the air.
Darren thought for a while, then said, "Crish, could you call me Darren from now on?"
"Of course Darren." The silver dragon replied.
"And Crish..."
"Yes?"
"Can you stay with me? For forever?"
Crish suddenly started to purr. Darren thought it odd since he had never heard of a dragon purring.
"As a Dragon Keeper, you have an ability to bond dragons to you. This means that your mind and your dragons' minds that you have bonded to you can never be separated. You could talk to each other through your thoughts and no secrets will be made that the others do not know about. If a bond gets extremely strong, the Keeper and the Dragon can see through each other's eyes. It is considered an honor to a dragon to be bonded with a Dragon Keeper."
Darren thought about bonding dragons to him. For a strange reason the idea of dragons invading his mind didn't sound horrible at all.
"You sure that bonding dragons won't mess with my head?" Darren asked, just to be safe.
"Bonding is just another way of communicating, Darren." Crish assured him, "I will not be able to change your thoughts anymore than I am able to with the spoken word. You will remain in control."
"Well then," Darren said standing up, "By the power of a Dragon Keeper, I bond Crish the dragon to me for as long as I shall live."
Darren found it odd that the words somehow came to him as he stated them, but found it odder still when a red mark representing a spiraling dragon appeared on his hand and one exactly like it, but black, appeared on Crish's head where he was standing.
Crish laughed and purred for joy, spinning through the air. Darren found it easy to stay on the dragon as she did so.
"Thank you Darren!" came Crish's voice through Darren's head, "For three thousand years I have waited to be bonded to a Dragon Keeper, and you are the first to do so! Thank you!"
"You're welcome." Darren thought back, not sure if Crish heard that or not. Though he wasn't so worried about that. He was more preoccupied with Crish's memories and life before she had met him. Darren saw that though Crish was burdened with many trials, she was kind and loving to everyone she met. He saw how smart she really was and how joyful she was that a Dragon Keeper had finally chosen her to form a bond with. However, Darren also saw her weaknesses in trusting others too quickly and her lack of strength among other dragons. Darren came to know Crish in just minutes, though they had only met just a couple of hours ago. He decided that Crish was a wonderful dragon, and an even greater friend. He was happy to have a Dragon Keeper's bond with her.
"We're going to your den, aren't we?" Darren asked Crish, grinning at her.
"There are no longer any secrets between us!" Crish said joyfully, "Yes. There we will begin your training so you can be the best Dragon Keeper you can be."
Darren watched the setting of the sun as they flew through the golden colored clouds. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel strange, weird, or scared. He felt like he was important and didn't feel like being something he wasn't. He was a Dragon Keeper, and he loved knowing that.
"I can't wait." He said happily as Crish started floating down towards the clouds.

Yes, it's supposed to be very long Smile I have a habit of creating novels...
Is there anything that you could use more explaining in this chapter? any way to help ya visualize the story better? Any spelling mistakes? Grammar?

Chapter two: Dragon Slayers
A boot came flying through the air and landed with a thud on Mei's head. With a groan and a snort, Mei pushed her messy white bangs out of her face. In the door way of her small square bedroom was a furious bride in a wedding gown. The blond curly haired she-devil had one white high heeled boot on her foot while the other was bare. Her dress was a dazzling white and green, much more fancy than anything Mei had.
"What are you still doing in bed?!" The bride screeched at Mei, "The rehearsal for the wedding is in ten minutes!"
"Exactly." Mei replied, sinking back under her covers, "Ten more minutes for me to get some sleep. I don't come to the wedding until after the vows, pigeon ceremony, and violin ballroom dancing."
"It's a dove ceremony first of all!" The bride yelled at the white haired girl, stomping into the room and throwing off her sheets, "And you need to be there for all of it! I don't care if you are only there to do magic tricks during the celebration, you are staying for all of it!"
"You shouldn't have done that." Mei growled in a low voice, "Taking the covers off a wizard could be fatal for your future marriage!"
"It can!?" The bride yelled in horror, "IIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
With that, the bride ran out the door, forgetting her shoe in Mei's room. Mei laughed so hard, she was sure that magic sparkles were coming out of her nose. It was too easy to frighten non-magic folk. Mei got up from her bed and looked at the pretty white boot. With a flick of her hand it changed from a gorgeous boot to a little white mouse with vibrant blue eyes. She bent down and picked up the rodent and nuzzled it's nose.
"There, much better to be able to move around on your own isn't it?" Mei asked the little mouse. The mouse jumped gleefully in her hand, then accidentally did something that made Mei giggle a bit.
"Don't worry about it." She said, wiping the mouse droppings away, "You'll soon be able to control that."
Suddenly there was a knock at Mei's door. Mei looked up to see her older brother, a man in a regal blue suit with neat black hair, standing in the door way. He looked very cross.
"Hello, Gemus." Mei said smiling, "Look what I made out of your bride-to-be's boot! Isn't he adorable?"
Gemus looked at the mouse, then back at Mei. "We need to talk."
"Oh! About what? Let me guess, about the horrible witch that you are about to marry today?"
"She is not a witch, Mei-Mei!"
"You're right. That's an insult to witches."
"I've had enough!" Gemus said, slamming the door behind him as he stepped into the room, "Ever since I met Philly you have always been against us. Why, Mei, why?"
"Because." Mei stated matter-of-factly. She jumped on top of her bed and let the mouse run out the window above her bed, "Un-like others, I see the real Phillvia, or Philly as you call her. You wouldn't understand; you weren't born with the gift of magic like I was."
"You're the only one in our family that was born with magic and the only one that doesn't like Philly." Gemus growled, "I'm starting to think that that magic makes you blind to what everyone else can see. Philly is a really nice and kind girl, and she's the one I've fallen in love with. Why can't you accept that?"
Mei turned to her brother sharply, he eyes glowing a slivery white. Her long white hair floated around her and her voice sounded like a roaring fire as she yelled, "GO NOW, AND NEVER SPEAK TO ME AGAIN!!! I WILL COME TO THE REHERSAL IN MY OWN TIME AND NOTHING CAN CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT HOW I FEEL ABOUT YOU AND PHILLVIA!!! BEGONE!!!"
Slivery wisps caught Gemus' collar and pulled him outside of Mei's room. Then the door closed and locked, slamming it on Gemus' sad and terrified face. Mei sat down on her bed, feeling exhausted from the amount of magic she had preformed. She heard a squeak from her window and turned to see the white mouse she had released scratching on her windowsill. She opened her window slightly to allow the mouse back into her room. She picked it up and stroked it's soft white fur. He nodded as the mouse squeaked to her, understanding what it was saying.
"Yes that was my brother." Mei replied to the mouse, "Yes, he is getting married to that wretched lady Phillvia today. The lady that wanted you to stay as a boot. Don't worry, I won't turn you back. Not even if they pay me for my performance tonight. Hmm? Why don't I like the idea of Gemus marrying Phillvia? Well, I told Gemus that it was because I sense something as a wizard, but that's not true. The truth is that I just don't get along with Phillvia. She rubs me the wrong way. She likes girly, frilly things and I'm much more of a nature, tough and dirty gal. I've tried to get along with her, I really have for Gemus. But getting along can only work if both of the people try to get along. I can't tell you how many frilly petticoats and gloves I had to put on for that nightmare. And I know that Phillvia won't let Gemus visit me in my forest cottage, the one my parents bought for me to practice magic in. She hates the outdoors and, more importantly, hates me. I'll probably never see Gemus again... it will never be like old times... when he used to come over and watch me preform spells I had learned... when we would go fishing in the river by my house... when he was the only one to show up for my birthday... I'll be all alone in my cottage once Gemus gets married..."
The white mouse squeaked and nuzzled Mei's thumb with it's small silky whiskers. Mei smiled and asked, "Really? You would be willing to stay with me, forever?"
The mouse squeaked once in reply, looking up at Mei with it's big blue eyes. Mei laughed, "Well thank you, honorable mouse! I guess I'll need to give you a name, won't I... How about Cezar?"
The mouse squealed in delight. Mei laughed once again, then set Cezar down. She went to her small wardrobe and pulled out her purple cloak and hat that had silver and black designs, black pants with a black belt that had a small book bag tied to it, and a loose faded indigo shirt.
"Since that drama took up much more time than I thought, we'll need to get ready sooner than originally planned."
Mei quickly replaced her brown sleeping rags with her outfit. As she was putting on her pointed hat though, she frowned at it.
"This is a bit too plain." She decided. She had to liven the hat up a bit. She twiddled her fingers in an arching motion, making a large indigo feather. She put it in the black cloth that circled the base of the hat. She twirled around to show Cezar, who did his best mousy clap.
"Now that that is taken care of," Mei turned to Cezar, "What would you like to be for the party? I would like to leave you a mouse so that we could frighten all the ladies at the wedding, but I want your input before I do so."
The mouse thought for a second before squeaking it's reply.
"A dragon?" Mei gasped, horrified, "I cannot turn you into a dragon! No, not even a small one. Dragons were declared to be evil by King Taylor eight years ago. If anyone were to see you as a dragon, you would be put to death immediately! Another reason? Does there really need to be another reason besides death? Alright, alright. Well... I probably wouldn't have enough magical power to turn you into a dragon... and besides, I fear dragons. They scare the wits out of me, so I wouldn't turn you into a dragon even if I could. Certainly there must be something else you want to be."
Cezar thought again for a moment, putting his paws on top of his head while thinking. He then jumped up and squeaked happily.
"A moose? Well as long as it is not a dragon." Mei said, waving her hand at Cezar. Cezar's little body tembled for a moment, then exploded into a huge puff of purple smoke, revealing a white moose sitting on the old wooden and straw bed. The bed creaked under Cezar's new found weight and it's legs snapped, sending the straw and planks to the floor.
"Maybe I should have waited till we were outside..." Mei said, shaking her head as Cezar started munching on the straw.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mei walked outside her parent's mansion where she saw hundreds of people running around; carrying green and white banners, candles, doves, cakes, and many other things for the wedding that night. Mei thought that everything was a little over the top, but then again her parents were known for throwing over the top celebrations. As Duke and Duchess of Tiger Lilly Hill, Mei assumed that everyone expected her parents to throw the most amazing parties. An expectation that her parents lived up to very well.
"Too bad they don't spend fortunes on their only daughter..." Mei said bitterly, hexing anyone's shoes who got close enough to her to get tied together. She then turned around and noticed that Cezar was hiding out by the house.
"Come on Cezar, don't be afraid of these buffoons. They can't even walk strait." Mei called to her moose as she hexed another pair of shoes, making the man fall into the cake he was carrying. Cezar seemed a bit reluctant still, but walked up to Mei anyways.
The two walked around the hustle and bustle until she found the heart shaped pavilion where the actual marriage would take place. The pavilion was decorated in green and white ribbons and white benches where placed inside the large area. In the middle of the area was a heart shaped platform with a white arch decorated in green ribbons and other fine silks. On the platform was the preacher with his white and silver robes on, Mei's parents who had matching outfits of white and pink, Phillvia in her one booted ensemble, and Gemus in his same blue suit Mei had seen him in before. They were discussing the outline for the wedding.
"So then after the dove ceremony, the violins will start to play, and then--  oh, Mei! I was worried you wouldn't come at all!" Gemus said, turning and seeing Mei arrive with Cezar following close behind. Phillvia turned around in disgust, but screamed when she saw the large moose following Mei.
"WHAT IN ARCHCHANG IS THAT!!!" She squealed, running around and hiding behind Gemus.
"It's a moose, dummy." Mei criticized, laughing, "It used to be a mouse and before that it was the boot you so rudely threw at my head."
"You threw a boot at my sister's head?" Gemus asked his bride-to-be.
Phillvia shook her head and cried, "No! I was trying to get your sister up so that she wouldn't be late for the rehearsal, but she took my boot and changed it into a mouse. Please make her change it back into my boot again, honey darling!"
Gemus turned back and glared at Mei, who glared back with equal amount of power.
"I cannot change this moose back into a boot." Mei announced once the glaring contest had gone on for ling enough, "I have grown too attached to it. I even named him Cezar. However, in order to sooth the bride's nerves, I'll gladly clone her boot so that she can have one for her other foot."
"I think that's fair." Gemus said, turning to Phillvia, "Will that be alright with you, dear?"
Phillvia looked over Gemus' shoulder to Mei, who mouthed, "You'd better or else..." Phillvia sighed and took off her boot and handed it to Gemus. Gemus walked off the podium and handed the boot to Mei. Mei took it from him and made an exact replica of the boot with just a snap of her fingers. She held out the boots to Gemus, but he didn't take them.
"Mei-Mei." He sighed, smiling at her.
Mei sighed in exasperation, "Fine. I'll make the clone for her right foot and the original for her left... but I'm only doing this for you, Gemus."
Mei snapped her fingers and the cloned boot fixed itself so that it could fit on a right foot instead of a left one. Gemus smiled and took the boots from Mei, thanking her for being a good sister. He returned the boots to Phillvia and helped her put them back on. As he did this, Mei's parents walked down from the podium to have a talk with their daughter.
"You will keep that animal as far away as possible form the wedding, do you hear me young lady?" Mei's mother whispered angrily as her frilly pink dress danced in the wind.
"I hear you mother," Mei stated sarcastically, "but I may not follow what you say."
"And no magic during the party until your performance." Mei's father said as his equally as pink and frilly suit flew in the wind, "And if anyone asks, you are not our daughter. You are just a traveling magician that came to bless the couple being wed today."
"Geeze father. You act as though I've never attended one of your parties." Mei growled at him, "I know how to act in front of you guys. You've taught me nothing else all my life."
Suddenly a man in a green suit covered in cake and streamers stumbled into the pavilion. Mei couldn't help but cackle in laughter when she saw him fall to the ground.
"Duke and Duchess of Tiger Lilly Hill?" The discombobulated messenger stuttered, "There has been a little trouble getting the party set up. half the cakes have been destroyed, many of the streamers have been tangled and everyone's shoes seems to be tied together in un-untie able knots."
Mei and Cezar couldn't help but laugh at the news. Mei laughed like a giddy school girl while Cezar made wheezing sounds through his fat nose. Mei's mother angrily grabbed Mei's ear and pulled her out of the pavilion. Mei instantly stopped laughing.
"Owowowowowowowowowowowowowowowow!" She muttered as her mother dragged her out. Gemus looked sadly at his sister as she left, but Phillvia had a smile that went ear to ear on her face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After Mei had finished fixing the mess she had made, the day was nearly through with the sun setting over the grassy hill of the Tiger Lilly Hill estate. She hadn't been able to attend the rehearsal for the wedding because her parents had forced her to clean up the mess without magic. She had found ways to get around her no magic rule during the cleaning, but it still took a lot of work to finish the job. She had to put Cezar in one of the stables for now, but she promised him that he'd get him for when she started to preform. Now it was late and time for the wedding to begin.
Mei wiped off the cake and crud off her robes and followed the steady line of people walking to the heart shaped pavilion. Everyone was dressed in either a suit or a fancy dress. All the women had a ton of make-up plastered onto their faces, even some of the men had eye liner on. Mei maneuvered through the crowd, casting sneezing spells on people's noses, clumsy spells on their legs, and even a spell on a pencil thin lady to make her appear fat to everyone else during the party.
Mei laughed quietly at her pranks and was about to hex another person when she saw some very odd people walk into the line. These people were not dressed like anyone else at the party. Their rough and rugged mountain villager look contrasted with the frilly and dressy look of everyone else. Curious, Mei decided to get to the entrance of the pavilion faster, leaving pranking for later, to ask her brother what they were doing here. Sadly, she had gotten caught in between three fat counts, talking about finances and housing deals they had found. None of the three seemed to notice that they were preventing any way of escape for Mei to hurry to the pavilion. The tough mountain people soon walked pass Mei and the three fat guys and into the pavilion. Annoyed, Mei reached up to one of the count's mustaches and pulled out half of it, making the man scream and step back. Mei took the chance to escape the fat count trap and into the pavilion.
She quickly found Gemus, who was greeting guests at the entrance, and exclaimed, "There are mountain people coming to your wedding?"
"What? Mountain people?" Gemus replied, confused. His eyes then glimmered with realization as he laughed, "Oh. You must mean the dragon slayers that walked in not to long ago."
"Dragon slayers?!" Mei screamed, alerting a few of the fancy dressed people. Gemus took his sister aside from the entrance to talk to her. "Why would you need dragon slayers at your wedding?" Mei whispered once they were a ways away from the guests.
"Because this is the year the Black Soot Dragons migrate to their nesting quarters and rumor has it that they will be flying over Tiger Lilly Hill in some time. The dragon slayers are here for protection during the wedding." Gemus explained.
"Are you sure they can defeat a dragon?" Mei stammered worryingly, "They just look like a bunch of hopeless barbarians to me..."
"Do you want to meet them to calm your nerves?" Gemus asked. Mei nodded vigorously. Gemus called the group of dragon slayers over and whispered a few things to one of the members of the group.
"This is Barnbus." Gemus said, showing Mei a large bearded man with a large broadsword at his side accompanied by a huge iron breastplate on his chest. He had on a cloak that looked like it was made of green and brown dragon scales and his long brown beard had black singe marks on it. His brown hair was pulled back into a long braid down his back. His green eyes looked friendly but fierce at he same time. "He's the leader of this dragon slayer company."
"Call me Barney, little lady." Barnbus said sounding like a jolly uncle. He leaned down to Mei and kissed her hand.
"Mei." She said in reply, instantly liking the man.
"Well, Mei," Barnbus said to her, "Gemus tells me that you're not sure if we can take on a dragon, is this correct."
"Yes sir." Mei said not fearing that what she said would anger him.
Barnbus laughed heartily as he said, "She's a very straight forward gal isn't she? Well I can assure you, me and my companions are expert dragon slayers. Just look at my cloak." Barnbus held out his cloak for Mei to feel the rough scales. "I got this by defeating a Two-Horned Spiral off the coast of the Balloot Islands."
"Wow..." Mei said, feeling the glossy green scales. They felt just like shards of glass. "I am convinced of your ability to slay dragons, but what of the others in your company?"
"They are as well trained as I am, little lady." Barnbus laughed again. He put his hand on the shoulder a slender man with dusty blond hair. He had a blue tunic on and a steel bow around his torso. Around his waist was a quiver full of arrows made of glass tubes filled with green gooey liquid. "This is Hans of the Alpine Mountains. He is an expert marks men and has killed over thirty dragons with his famous Dragon's Bane Jelly arrows."
"Please, Barnbus." Hans said, smiling at the bearded man, "You make me sound better than I really am. Those thirty dragons I killed were only Sprite Flares; no bigger than a rabbit and too small of wings for them to fly away."
"Yes, but thirty is a big feat for any dragon slayer with those poisonous pests." Barnbus said, slapping Hans on the back and nearly making him fall over. The leader then showed a shaggy red haired ten-year old boy to Mei. The boy had a wild look in his eye and his clothes were torn and ragged.
"This is Ruben." Barnbus said.
"RUBEN!!!" The kid yelled, spinning around and grabbing onto Barnbus' beard.
"Owch! Get off you little Gruggrat!" Barnbus said pulling the kid off his facial hair.
"That's a Gruggrat?" Mei exclaimed, interested in the little wild boy, "I thought they had gone extinct!"
"Nope. Ruben here is the last of his kind. I'm surprised you knew about Gruggrats." Barnbus said, enduring another attack from Ruben to his beard.
"I study what I like." Mei replied, "Gruggrats are an ancient race that could shape-shift into fierce beasts. They used to be feared by even the greatest of kings. However, when the great freeze came, many of the Gruggrat race died because they could not adapt to the cold weather. The only ones that survived where wooly Gruggrats, but even then most all of them died off because of lack of food."
"Quite a bookworm aren't you, little lady?" Barnbus chuckled, trying to get Ruben off his beard again.
"I try." Mei joked back. That's when an armored lady with an axe on her back stepped forward to get Ruben off Barnbus' beard. She was very fair with long black hair tied up in a pony tail on her head. Her armor was a gold color with many dents and scratches in it.
"Ruben, you naughty little boy. Get off Barney right this instant." She spoke to the wild child with voice like silk.
Ruben let go and clung to the woman, "MOMMA!"
"Momma?" Mei asked.
"Adopted momma is more appropriate." The lady replied, "I am Gladia, professional knife thrower and axe wieldier. Pleased to meet you."
"Gladia has been a dragon slayer all her life, as have I." Said a gruff voice behind Gladia. Mei looked up to see a towering bald giant over Gladia with a spear attached to his back and a bladed boomerang strapped onto his beefy arm. He wore many belts and packs that looked like they were filled with very heavy items.
"This is Sulfrion. You can call him Sulley if you like." Gladia said, hugging the gigantic man, "He's also my husband."
"DADDY!" Ruban yelled, attaching himself to Sulfrion. Sulfrion just smiled and ruffled the hair of the little boy. Mei was still taken aback by the shear size of the man, and Sulfrion seemed to take notice.
"I'm part giant." He explained, "Father had identity issues, if you know what I mean."
Mei wasn't sure if she knew what he meant, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to find out. As she looked at the family all together; the giant, the beauty, and the Gruggrat; it seemed like an odd family. Though they seemed happy, so Mei decided to think nothing more of it.
"Anyway," Barnbus said, sounding annoyed that he didn't get to introduce them himself, "all there's left is the strapping young lad over-- wait! Where'd he go? Well, at any rate he joined our company just a few weeks ago and has already slain three class A dragons!"
"Class A?" Mei asked confused.
Hans kneeled next to her and explained, "We classify dragons by their size most of the time because there are species that vary in size. Class E is the smallest type of dragon, about as big as your palm or a rat or as big as a cat or goat. Class D dragons are about as big as a man. Class C are about as big as a small house. Class B is as big as a gigantic mansion, and class A dragons are considered to be anything bigger than a class B dragon."
"Wow!" Mei gasped, realizing how big of dragons the young man had defeated, "That's amazing! I simply have to meet him! What's his name?"
Barnbus was about to speak, but a young man's voice interrupted him saying, "My name is Darren."
Mei turned to see a young man looking about sixteen, about her age, enter the pavilion. His hair was spiky, brown, and just barely dusted the top of his eyes. He was wearing a long-sleeved brown tunic with a red cloak. On his hands were black leather gloves and on his feet were brown leather boots. He wore a leather strap around his chest and a black belt that held a silver sword with rubies decorating the hilt. He also wore a black leather satchel around his chest. His eyes were sky blue and his white teeth made his smile dazzling.
He walked across the room to Mei and bowed to her, "Pardon for my absence, wizardress, but I was busy patrolling the perimeter for any sign of Black Soot Dragons."
"How did you know I was a wizard?!" Mei asked, alarmed.
Darren looked up and smiled, "Your robes and hair, mistress. I've been around many wizards before and many of them dress similar to you and have differently colored hair. That and you just told me right now."
"Oh..." Mei said, sounding disappointed. She had hoped no one would notice that she was a wizard.
"Do not be ashamed." Darren quickly said, rising from his bow and taking Mei's hand, "Where I come from, wizards are considered to be a blessing and a sign of good fortune."
"Well that's not the case at Tiger Lilly Hill." Mei said sadly, "Here wizards are mocked and shunned because of their power."
"Jealousy." Darren almost laughed, "Jealousy can drive men to do the most horrible of things. Of course wizards would be hated here because of the lack of magic in this city. Well, that and your eye-blinding beauty."
"Alright, that's enough Darren for one day." Barnbus said, taking Darren by the shoulders and pulling him back. Mei could feel her face blushing, so she pulled down the wide brim of her hat to hide it.
Darren only laughed and grinned, "Barnbus, you should know by now that I'm quite the charmer."
"A charmer and a hot-shot are two very different things." Barnbus said jokingly, "Remember that girl back in Falvio City?"
"Uh, let's not bring that up..." Darren said, getting pale in the face with the memory.
"Poor little Eliza left at the alter without her brave dragon slayer--" Barnbus teased.
"Shut-up!" Darren growled, "Eliza was just a lunatic girl! You seriously save a girl from a dragon once and they think you and they were meant to be together forever!"
"Oh Darren!" Barnbus said, trying to say it in a high pitched voice, "Oh Darren! You were so brave the way you fought that dragon! Marry me Darren, Marry me!"
"I'm leaving now..." Darren stated with a glowing red face, turning to walk away. However, Barnbus grabbed him again and put him in a head-lock. He then started ruffling Darren's hair with his fist.
"Aw, I'm just messing with you lad!" Barnbus laughed. Everyone in the company laughed as well, even Darren. Mei un-hid her face and stared at the strange boy, confused. Did he actually mean that she was beautiful, or did he just say that to every girl he met?
"So Darren, you defeated three class A dragons?" Gemus asked, looking equally as confused at the company's rowdy behavior.
"Yep." Darren said, ducking out from Barnbus' head lock, "I even have the teeth to prove it. See?"
Darren pulled out a rope out of his satchel which had three long fangs, about as big as Sulfrion's hands, tied to it.
"Wow!" Mei and Gemus gasped.
"And you wouldn't believe it, but these are the smallest teeth in the dragons I found. They have many others that are about ten times as long!"
Suddenly the violinists started playing the familiar tune of 'Here Comes the Bride'. Gemus lost his breath! He wasn't where he needed to be! He quickly ran up to his place on the podium before Phillvia walked into the room. The company of dragon slayers laughed quietly.
"Seems like we've already made a mess of things." Barnbus whispered, "Come on dragon slayers, lets go take our seats."
The group started walking away, leaving Mei alone in the back. Mei was about to exit the pavilion, when she felt someone take her arm.
"Hey, where you going?" The dashing boy Darren asked, flashing his dazzling smile, "The wedding's in here."
Mei at first was surprised to see him and quickly replied, "I'm not going to the wedding."
"Why?" Darren asked. Mei sighed exasperatedly, annoyed with the confusing boy.
"Because I'm not welcome here, and frankly I don't support this marriage. I'm going to wait outside till it's time for me to perform. Then I'm going back home to my cottage in the forest where I'll be forever alone. Good day to you, Darren."
Mei walked out of the pavilion, leaving Darren behind, and walked down to where a huge tent was set up. Inside the tent were all the many cakes and refreshments that Mei's parents had set up for after the wedding. Walking around the tables with green and white table cloths on them, Mei found herself at a table with a big green cake with white sugar roses on it was sitting. Looking around to make sure no one was there, she took off a rose and ate it on one bite. She 'mmm'ed happily as she took another one.
"Could I have one?" came a familiar voice from behind her.
"GGAAAAHHHH!!!" Mei screamed as she swung her hand back, casting a spell on whoever was behind her. Darren, not being so quick to react, got his face slapped by Mei and unfortunately gained some kitty whiskers on his face.
"OW!" Darren yelled, covering his nose with his hands. Blood started coming from it, making his gloves red.
Mei Looked back and yelled, "Don't do that idiot!"
"Do what?!"
"Sneak up on a wizard! I could have taken your head off!"
"Well, sorry for surprising you." Darren almost laughed, "But I really think you should be apologizing to me for the nose bleed and the new whiskers."
Darren playfully twisted the white hairs coming out of his cheeks. "Heh. I've always wanted a mustache."
"I'm confused..." Mei stated whirling around and waving her hand at the whiskers, "If you want a mustache, can't you just grow one? You are a guy, right?"
"Not as simple as that." Darren replied, thankful that the whiskers disappeared finally, "Yes, I could grow a mustache, but then it would just burn off."
"What? Why?"
Darren stared at Mei as if the reason for him not having facial hair wasn't clear, "I fight dragons."
"Barnbus has a big wooly beard." Mei pointed out.
"That's because he wants to catch on fire." Darren replied, "But why are we talking about the hair on men's faces? It makes for some awkward conversation. Instead of continuing on with this non-sense subject, can you do anything about my nose? You're a lot stronger than you look."
Darren removed his hand from his nose, revealing the red liquid leaking out of it. Mei nearly gagged at the sight. She crossed her arms and turned away from the boy with the gross nose.
"Sorry," She explained, "but I'm not a healer. If I was to try to fix your nose, it would cause me to get the same injury that you have. I'd basically be taking your pain on myself. Besides, you deserve it for following me to the snack tent after I so obviously said goodbye to you."
"Acctually, you said 'good day', not goodbye." Darren said smugly, wiping his nose blood on his sleeve.
"It's the same thing!" Mei yelled turning around. She gagged again when she saw what Darren was doing to his sleeve. "Ugh. That's disgusting! Here, at least wipe it on something other than your clothes!" Mei moved her hand toward a bowl of napkins across the room and levitated it toward Darren. He gladly too  ten napkins out of the bowl and pushed them all up onto his nose.
"Not all at once!" Mei growled at him, "Don't you know how to do anything right? Here, let me do it!"
Darren shrugged and pulled up a chair for himself. Mei took a chair for herself and grabbed the wad of tissues from Darren. She took the few that were clean and set them on the table; then she took the rest and started dabbing off the blood on Darren's face. She glared at him as she did her work, thinking Darren was nothing but a trickster with a sarcastic attitude. Darren sat there smiling at Mei, thinking about her and how much the tissue tickled his nose.
"There." Mei said once the blood was finally clear from Darren's face, "Now stick a napkin up your nose so that you don't loose anymore blood. I don't think your brain could handle loosing more of the blood it so desperately needs."
"Was that an insult?" Darren laughed, "Clever, but ultimately useless if used on people dumber than the average. Luckily I'm not that clueless."
"You're strange..." Mei said, staring at the laughing boy. How come he laughed so much? How could he stand to be this happy?
"Noted." Darren replied, standing up and returning his chair to the table he got it from, "So now may I have a sugar rose?"
Mei shrugged indifferently, so Darren picked three roses off the cake. He took a bite out of one and mmm-ed happily.
"Wow! it sure has been a long time since I've tasted sugar. Here, have another!" Darren handed one of the roses to Mei, but she didn't take it. Instead she just looked at the optimistic boy. He looked a bit awkward with a napkin shoved up his nose, but he still looked as happy as a kitten on a milking barn. Darren started shaking the rose to make Mei want to take it, but she did nothing. Darren sighed, "My arm is getting tired... You want it or not?"
To appease him, Mei took the rose and bit off one of the petals. Darren smiled happily, then grabbed another rose off the cake.
"Great! At this rate, we'll be able to eat all the roses off the cake before they are done saying their vows." Darren said through a mouthful of sugar rose.
"What?" Mei asked, confused once again by the young dragon slayer.
"I know you don't like it that you don't like it that your brother is getting married, so I thought I'd help you prank the party guests. I saw you hexing them as we walked to the pavilion."
"But you were on patrol, how could--" Mei then gasped, "How did you know Gemus is my brother!?"
Darren smiled mischievously, "You both have the same nose and eyes. That and you just told me."
Mei huffed, making her bangs fly out of her eyes. That was the second time he had done that today. The first time, Mei had thought it was cute. Now it was just annoying.
"I saw you hexing the guests just as I left on patrol; to answer the first question you were going to ask." Darren explained, picking the rest of the flowers off the cake, "I know you don't want your brother to get married, so I thought I might as well help you sabotage it anyway I can. Granted, we can't change your brother's mind, but we sure could have some fun messing with the bride's wedding day!"
"Why would you want to help me?" Mei asked, suspicious, "You don't know anything about the issue and frankly, it's not your problem."
"True, but I have a habit of helping others with their problems, even if I don't know every detail in full." Darren said, handing her eight of the sixteen roses he held, "As long as I think the person I'm helping is trustworthy, I'll help them go to the ends of the earth. That's basically my job, helping others. Especially if their problems involve dragons. However, it's more fun when you get to do something devious for a change. So what do you want to do after we dispose of all these flowers? We could raid the wedding presents for treasure, or perhaps we could put some powdered onion on the cookies."
As Darren continued talking about all the things he'd be willing to do to make this the worst wedding day for Phillvia, Mei's attitude towards him got better and better. She smiled widely at the dragon slayer then looked at the roses in her hands.
"I've got an idea of what we could do." She said, throwing the sugar flowers into the air, turning them into white sugary bats.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Are you sure we need all these fireworks?" Darren asked, placing the last big rocket into place, "You know that Black Soot Dragons could be flying over here at anytime."
"Details, details!" Mei said excitedly, setting up the stage for her performance, "Besides, if it hits one of those creatures, then they'll be the ones who get burned."
"That's what I'm worried about." Darren muttered so that Mei couldn't hear. He had planned the migration to the Black Soot Dragon's nesting ground perfectly so that they could go there and get back as soon as possible, without his group of dragon slayers being a danger to them. Now he only hoped that the fireworks he was setting up didn't interfere with his plan. Darren stared at the starry night sky as he thought.
"Darren," Came a voice from inside his head, "are you sure that we should go through with the plan tonight? It would be alright if we waited another night."
"No Crish." Darren thought to his dragon that he first bonded with, "If the Black Soot Dragons don't move tonight, the tide will start coming in too soon for the females to lay their eggs. They won't be able to go back for another whole year. Chief Hyperfang will be furious if his clan doesn't make it again this year."
"Oh to ashes with Hyperfang!" Crish roared in Darren's head, "That dragon is more stubborn than pine needles stuck in scales! He's going to get his whole clan killed one day!"
"Relax Crish." Darren thought, "If we stick to the plan, everything will be alright. Just make sure to tell the Black Soot Dragons to stay clear of the wedding on top of the hill tonight and warn them of the fireworks."
"Alright. I'll trust you." Crish stated, her voice fading away from Darren's mind.
Mei looked over at Darren, who looked like he was staring intently at the firework he had just placed.
"Everything alright dragon slayer?" She said, pulling out a big purple box onto the stage. Darren looked like he woke up from a daze and quickly looked at Mei.
"What? Sorry, did you say something?"
"I asked if everything was alright." Mei said, glaring at him, "You need to get your hearing checked."
"Sorry." Darren apologized, standing up and helping Mei move the heavy box into place, "I zone out sometimes..."
"Weird, but not unheard of I guess." Mei said, standing back to make sure the box was in the exact position she wanted it, "Move it back a little... There! Perfect! Phillvia is going to get such a surprise when she gets into this!"
"What's the last step to your big wedding surprise?" Darren asked, hopping off the stage and tying all the firework fuses together.
"To make you a doppelganger." Mei said, taking out her wand from the inside pocket of her purple robes.
"How's that work?" Darren asked, getting back on the stage and standing next to Mei.
"Like this!" Mei squealed excitedly. She waved her wand in a circular motion, causing a white wispy ring of magic to appear. She then flicked her wand at Darren, causing the ring of magic to encircle his waist. The magic circle then widened into a cylinder around him and finally moved beside him, carrying an exact replica of Darren in it. Mei sighed and wiped the sweat from her head.
"Woah!" Darren exclaimed, looking at the lifeless puppet of himself.
"Now we just need to move him and you into your places." Mei panted, sounding exhausted, "Then we can let people take their seats and begin the show."
"You ok?" Darren asked Mei, "You look tired."
"It's my magic levels." Mei explained, "My magic level determines how much magic I can use. The more I use of it each day, the more amount of magic I get each day. It's kind of like exercising a muscle."
"Oh... Well are you sure you can cast the spell for tonight?" Darren asked, looking worried. Mei just laughed.
"Yes, I'll be able to cast the spell just fine. I know where my levels stand right now. I'll probably not be able to do anymore spells after tonight's spell though."
"Ok. If you say so chief." Darren shrugged, "So how do we move this handsome fellow to my seat?"
"I'll do it." Mei said, dispelling the magical cylinder and grabbing the Darren puppet. She dragged the lifeless puppet to Darren's seat behind a green table with a white vase on it. She stood it up and told the actual Darren to stand in his place near the fireworks. As soon as Darren was ready, Mei tapped the puppet Darren on the head with her wand. The puppet instantly came to life, mimicking every move Darren made.
"Now sit down." Mei commanded the real Darren.
"But there's no chair over here!"
"Just do it."
Darren began to sit down, thinking that he'd hit the grass, but to his surprise, he sat in thin air! He looked over at his doppelganger who was sitting in the chair.
"Sweet!" Darren said, standing and sitting multiple times, just to see his puppet move. Mei shoved the puppet back down in his chair, making Darren sit as well.
"No getting out of your seat during the performance!" Mei commanded, looking at Darren with a stern face.
"You're no fun." Darren pouted sticking his tongue out at her, making the puppet do so as well. Mei slapped the puppet, causing Darren to feel the pain of yet another slap to the face. "Hey! You already made my nose bleed once today! You don't need to do it again!" Mei only laughed and left to start bringing people to their seats. Darren shook his head at his doppelganger, "She's insane, isn't she?"
Suddenly, Darren realized that he didn't have a very important tool that he needed!
"Aw Dragon Dung! Where are the matches!!!"
Darren looked around franticly, making his puppet nock his head against the vase of white roses. Suddenly he spotted them on the table his doppelganger was sitting at. Darren moved his hand, moving his puppet's hand, near the matches; grabbing onto them. Maybe he could throw them to himself...
Darren swung his arm back and threw the matches as hard as he could. The puppet followed his movement, but the matches flew into the air, sailing over Darren and into the grass behind him. Darren yelled, "What's wrong with you!?" only to realize he was yelling at himself. He leaned back in his invisible chair and put his hand to his forehead in exasperation. He knew he could always just breathe fire at the fuse, but that was risky. If someone saw him, that would spell disaster for his plan to get the Black Soot Dragons to their nesting grounds in time. What's more, if his doppelganger could breathe fire as well then everything would be more awkward than it already was.
Darren decided to test the abilities of his doppelganger. He took in a deep breath and blew out a small jet of flame. His doppelganger just looked like he was screaming mutely at the stage. Darren sighed in relief. So that wouldn't be a problem.
Suddenly Darren saw a mass of people moving toward the seats surrounding the stage. Mei appeared on the stage, looking at Darren in excitement.
"Ready?" She asked.
"Um..." Darren said nervously looking behind him to where the matches had fallen, "Yeah, I guess."
"Great! I'll stomp on the stage once I'm ready for you to light the fireworks. Got it?"
"Stomp, then light em' up." Darren repeated, "Got it."
Suddenly Darren jerked forward. "What was that?!" he gasped in surprise, the invisible table nocking the wind out of him.
"That was Sulfrion patting you on the back." Mei said gleefully. Then looking up at the audience, she exclaimed, "Welcome one and all to a night of mystery and wonder! Please, take your seats so that we can begin!"
As Darren heard all the people taking their seats, he thought about what to do about lighting the fireworks.
"You could just not light them." Came Crish's lightning like voice inside Darren's head.
"I couldn't do that." Darren thought back, "I already promised that I'd help her, and that's what I'm going to do."
"You sure?"
"Yes. She's about to loose her brother tonight to a strange woman that apparently she doesn't get along with. The least I can do is give her this one moment of happiness."
"You act as if you protect humans as well, young Dragon Keeper." Crish laughed.
"In a way I do..." Darren thought, "I know it's not a part of being a Dragon Keeper, to protect humans and dragons, but it sure is easier to do both jobs than to just do one."
"You are truly the oddest Dragon Keeper I have ever met." Crish thought, then responded, "The Black Soot Dragons are on the move right now. They should be over Tiger Lilly Hill by the time your wizard friend ends her show. Be careful, Darren."
"I will as long as you are too."
"I will."
Mei's voice snapped Darren out of his daze, "Now that you are all seated, the magic can begin!"
Only Gemus, the dragon slayer company, and Darren clapped their hands. Everyone else huffed or groaned at Mei. Mei, however, seemed undeterred by this lack of enthusiasm and continued on with her speech.
"Now many of you have seen my display of power tonight with all your runny noses and tied-together shoes. Even the bride herself knows that I turned her boot into a moose named Cezar this morning!"
Mei turned and showed off Cezar, who gallantly strut across the stage and sat next to Mei. The dragon slayers laughed at the moose's funny walk, but everyone else was as quiet as a mouse.
"So, sadly, I will only be able to do one trick tonight because my magic is very low at the moment."
A few people yelled, "Get on with it then!" which made Mei blush red with anger. However, she kept her cool, thinking about what was to come.
"The new Ms. Goldenlock, may I see you up here for a moment?" Mei said, pointing to Phillvia. Phillvia looked nervously at Gemus, who only nodded his head toward the stage. Grudgingly, Phillvia got up from her chair and walked onto the stage. Mei grinned manically.
"Great, now if you would please step into the box, then I can do my trick."
Phillvia glared at Mei fiercely, but did as she said and went inside the big purple box. Mei then took out her wand and stomped on the stage.
Darren quickly blew a quick jet of flame on the fuse of the rockets, his puppet looking like he was yawning.
"Who wants to see a bride fly?!" Mei yelled happily, taking her wand and flicking it at the box. The box rumbled and shook, then levitated about three inches off the ground. Mei then jerked her wand up above her head and the box shot into the sky. Mei could hear Phillvia's screams from inside the box, making her smile. She flicked her wand to and fro, placing the box above where the fireworks would shoot to.
"Uh-oh, what is this?" Mei laughed as a firework shot up towards the box. Everyone gasped and screamed with horror as the firework hit the box, making it explode into many different colors. However, when the smoke cleared, Phillvia was unharmed and floating in the air.
"Here come some more!" Mei laughed gleefully, making Phillvia soar through the air as the fireworks chased her around. Phillvia was screaming in terror, but everyone else was watching with awe.
"She's an angel!" Someone exclaimed form the crowd.
"She looks so elegant!" Said another count.
Darren laughed. The fireworks weren't showing any of the Black Soot Dragons in the sky and Mei was laughing her head off at the bride's reaction. This, he thought, was perfect!
Suddenly, Phillvia screamed even shriller than before! Everyone in the crowd heard her screams and almost all at once told Mei to put her down immediately. Groaning, Mei did so, letting the last firework go off right next to Phillvia.
As Phillvia descended to the ground, what she was screaming suddenly became audible.
"DRAGONS!" She wailed, "THERE ARE DRAGONS IN THE SKY! DRAGONS!!!"
Mei's legs tensed up. She quickly dispelled her levitation spell, making Phillvia fall into Gemus' lap and accidentally dispelling Darren's doppelganger. Darren instantly fell backwards, landing on his back.
"Dragon dung!" He thought franticly to Crish, "Get everyone out of the sky! Get everyone out of the sky! They found you! Get out now!!!"
"Already on it." Crish replied through thought.
Darren ran out to his dragon slayer buddies though the chaotic crowd. Everyone was screaming and running for cover under the heart shaped pavilion. Some even ran down the hill to the mansion for shelter. Darren bumped into the stomach of Sulfrion once he finally found the dragon slayers.
"Darren, I was worried when I saw you disappear like that!" Sulfrion said, grabbing the spear off his back.
"Draw your sword, lad." Barnbus commanded, taking out his shield and sword as well.
"Wait, wait!" Darren tried to reason with his friends, "How do we even know that there are dragons up there? I don't see anything. That girl could just be insane, or it could be a trick of the eyes!"
"Nope." Hans said to Darren, "I've seen them too. The fireworks gave them away."
"And you know that if Hans sees something, it is there." Barnbus said, "so get your sword out and meet us in the field. We're going to lure them down here using the catapult cart."
The three men went running into the open field to retrieve the cart.
"Wait! Please!" Darren yelled, but they were already too far away for them to hear him. Behind him stood Gladia with Ruben in one arm and her battle axe in the other.
She put her hand on Darren's shoulder and said, "I'm sorry, Darren. I know you don't like to fight, but you have to protect these people first."
Darren looked up at Gladia and sighed. Gladia hugged Darren, making Ruben latch onto him for a moment, before she and her son ran to catch up with the others. Darren stood there, looking defeated.
He glumly whispered, "Yes, I need to protect these people, but I also need to protect those dragons..."
Mei was still glued to her place on the stage. She looked up at the sky in fear.
"Dragons?" She muttered in fear. Suddenly she felt someone scoop her up from her frozen state. She looked up to see her brother carrying her into the snack tent. Once inside, Gemus put her down under one of the tables and scooted under it with her. Mei did not let go of her brother. Together they stayed there, waiting for the dragon slayers to say it was alright to come out.
Meanwhile, Barnbus and his dragon slayers brought up their storage wagon from the bottom of the hill. Sulfrion stabilized the wagon by nailing wooden planks into the sides and back of the wagon. Hans and Gladia pulled off the cover of the wagon and Barnbus prepared the oil slick cannon ball. Darren came down to see that the catapult was nearly ready to fire.
As Barnbus loaded the slick cannon ball into the catapult, he spotted Darren and grinned, "So you finally decided to show up lad? Great! It's your turn to fire the catapult today."
"What?" Darren gasped, horrified, "But I don't want to!"
"Sure you do, lad! It's not that hard. All you do is pull that lever there." Barnbus said, pointing to a steel lever on the side of the cart.
"No! I won't do it!" Darren yelled, "I don't want to fight these dragons! They aren't attacking anyone, so why should we attack them?!"
"Here he goes again." Hans sighed, pulling out one of his Dragon's Bane arrows and loading it in his bow.
"You know very well why we have to attack dragons!" Barnbus yelled at Darren, walking over to him and grabbing the collar of his cloak, "Because they are evil and vile beasts that are wanted dead by the King. Are you going against the king's orders, Darren? Are you a traitor to the crown?"
Suddenly Darren heard Crish's voice in his head, "Darren, they aren't listing! They refuse to stop flying to their nesting grounds!"
"What?!" Darren angrily yelled in his head.
"Barnbus!" Galdia yelled at the bearded man, "He's just a child!"
"Did you tell them it was orders from me?" Darren asked Crish through thought.
"Yes, but they don't believe me! They are not stopping!" Crish sounded like she was going to cry, "What do we do?!"
"He's a solider that is ignoring his leader!" Barnbus yelled at Darren through his dazed look, "Well? Answer me boy!"
Darren glared at the bearded man, thinking to Crish, "Then it can not be helped. A battle will be here tonight. Warn any dragon that will listen to you. And tell them I'm sorry..."
Crish wept in his head as her voice faded from his head. Darren stared solemnly at Barnbus and stated, "No. I am not a traitor to the crown. I will pull the lever, as you ordered sir."
Darren said this with as much hate in his voice he could muster. Not hate towards Barnbus, but hate towards the battle that was undoubtedly going to be fought tonight. Darren pushed Barnbus' hands off his collar and walked to the lever, ready to pull it. Sulfrion lit the oily cannon ball on fire and  pointed to Barnbus.
"FIRE!" Barnbus yelled at Darren.
Darren shut his eyes and muttered, "I'm sorry..." as he pulled the lever down, causing the catapult to fling the flaming ball into the air.
LOL! As soon as I'm done with the story and edit it, then I'll publish. it would look ridiculous to only have two chapters in a novel without me finishing the story Razz
LoL! There's like over ten chapters that I've planned. I think I'm just going to type them in word, then paste and post when I'm done.
